2017 The Players Championship – What to Watch FORE!

Congratulations to Brian Harman on his win at the Wells Fargo Championship.  Eagle Point Golf Club was immaculate and the finishing hole was a great one.  Everything about what I saw on TV looked perfect.   Can’t say enough about it.

ESPN says Brian Harman swings right handed.  This is interesting because they have photographs of him playing left handed.  Sometimes its just easier to make things up.  Harman has had a lot of success on the course this year.  He’s ranked 12th on tour with the win, but has 4 total top 10’s in 17 events.  Harman’s biggest strength comes with the flat stick (if the winning putt Sunday didn’t give that away) he’s ranked 4th on tour.  Making putts equals making cuts.

The Tournament

The Players is often referred to as golf’s fifth major.  The list of winners is impressive and almost always features a big name.  Almost always.  The tournament undoubtedly features the strongest field of the year.  The 146 guys teeing it up have earned their spot in this event.

When Pete Dye designed the course, he worked hard to develop something that didn’t favor any particular playing style; The course cannot be overpowered, it requires precision approaches, and players need to work the ball in both directions.  Some holes themselves require different shot shapes for success.  The weather this week is going to be supreme so golfers have only the course to test them.  For many, that’s enough.

If the course wasn’t enough, the 6th, 7th, & 12th hole has been redesigned for this year. The 6th and 7th have had a water hazard put in place and a number of mounds removed to make them more dramatic.

The 12th is where fans will noticed the biggest changes.  What was once an easy lay-up off the tee for birdie has become 302 yard risk-reward hole.  Missed tee shots can find the water left.  Layups will not necessarily make for easy birdies either.  Even at 302, this hole will require accurate shots to reward players with birdies.

TPC Louisiana is 7,189 yards playing to a par 72.

The defending champion is Jason Day.

My Pick

Last Week: MC   Season Stats: Winner – 2, Top 10 – 4, Top 25 – 4, Top-50 – 2, MC – 3

Dustin Johnson

Last week everyone was concerned with how Johnson would play after his freak accident at The Masters.  Johnson played really well; T-2.  He’s beginning to enter that realm of being unbeatable.  Whether he’s seen as a hero or villian, Dustin Johnson stalking the top of the leaderboard each week is exactly what golf needs this summer.

****Sellstant Week Long Challenge****

With no Podcast in the near future, I asked the staff a sports radio question.  Who will win more money on tour this season?  Vijay Singh or Tiger Woods.  This will be a running tally.

Tiger Woods: $0 – Done for ’17

Vijay Singh: $50,303 – +70000 to win this week.

Some Stuff to Look For

  • 17th Hole– This hole is the signature at TPC Sawgrass.  Players can make 9’s and players can make 1’s.  Speaking of 1’s, text “Ultra” to 55999 and you could win 95 cases of beer if Brooks Koepka makes an ace in any of 10 events this season.  Fowler made a 1 at the practice round today. rickie-fowler-ace-on-par-3-17-at-tpc-sawgrass-during-practice-round
Also be on the lookout for 17th hole vignettes.  You’ll see at least 3 pieces on NBC Sunday about how hard it is to hit the green, how many balls hit the water, and Russell Knox’s experience last year.  There may be a fourth on the guy who dives for the golf balls.
  • 12th Hole – This is the most noticeable change to the course.  Its going to be interesting to see what plays into players’ decisions off the tee.  302 is laughable for guys, but with water and a LOT of money on the line, how laughable?
  • GIR – This course is fair and requires you do hit greens for success.  Bermuda greens can be awfully frisky in the afternoons.  Guys need to hit greens and keep it close if they want to be holding the trophy on Sunday.

Who is broadcasting the event this week?

NBC.  NBC is finally back in all its glory.  The Players is a course synonymous with great lines.  I still equate “Be the right club TODAY!” with a friend of mine every time I hear it.  With that said, there are an equal amount of bad calls.

Listen in 16 seconds into this video from Skratch.  What is a “Stanford Club Selection”?  Here’s to hoping Johnny will go full Johnny.

What Bugged Me This Week?

Breakfast Pizza

You read that right.  Breakfast pizza.  For those unfamiliar, breakfast pizza is a omelette atop a slice of pizza crust.

I’ve always been a big proponent of eating pizza for breakfast.  It must be microwaved and it should really be refrigerated, though I’d let it slide after only one night.

Breakfast pizza is just your breakfast on a pizza.  You can get a diner breakfast for the same price and enjoy the whole thing.  What does one do when you have left over breakfast pizza?  It’s a sham.  Don’t fall for breakfast pizza.

Good Song

Generally this song will keep me from hitting something/somebody due to the above.

‘Til next week.  Tee it high and keep it dry.
